Gassler Electron Devices

Based in Ulm, Germany, Dr. Gassler Electron Devices are specialists in high-precision electron guns, electron-optical systems and cathode ray tubes.

They specialise in the design and manufacture of professional electron guns and associated systems for a wide range of specialist applications.

With expertise in electron-optical design, precision engineering and custom manufacturing, the company supplies high-performance solutions for applications including:

  • RHEED Systems
  • RHEED Accessories
  • Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs)
  • X-ray guns for medical and industrial applications

The company also manufactures specialist cathode ray tubes for avionics and other demanding applications, combining decades of experience with a commitment to precision, reliability and long-term product support.

Dr. GASSLER ELECTRON DEVICES traces its roots to the Ulm manufacturing facility of AEG, a long-established German technology company. Following successive ownership changes involving Thomson-CSF (later Thales) and Samtel, the business was acquired through a management buyout, retaining the expertise and technical knowledge of its experienced team.

Today, the company builds on more than 70 years of experience in the custom design and manufacture of high-precision electron guns, components and complete systems.

VSM Instruments is a reseller for the Gassler Electron Devices RHEED product lines including:

  • RHEED guns with 3 different energy options
  • Options for differential pumping to operate at elevated pressure
  • Phosphor screens for RHEED applications in a variety of materials
  • RHEED camera and software for capture and analysis of the image

RHEED is a diffraction technique used to analyse the surface of ordered or crystalline materials usually undergoing a process of layer by layer growth such as during MBE (Molecular Beam Epitaxy) or PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition). The technique is well suited to monitoring in-situ deposition because its long working distance and grazing angle does not shadow the sample from the material being deposited. The individual diffraction spots can be monitored and usually exhibit oscillations in intensity as each new layer is formed, the peak of the oscillation represents the maximum degree of order since a new monolayer is complete. Our RHEED guns are available in 3 different version with different primary beam energy and are equipped with a long-life filament. The higher energy version exhibits a slightly better spot profile but the lower energy versions have a price advantage.
