Port aligners are a very useful components which are used to provide a very fine angular adjustment combined with a small axial positional  adjustment for components within a vacuum system. They are most frequently used as a set-and-forget adjuster, for example to provide correct alignment of a transfer rod so that a sample holder hits its target perfectly. They comprise two flanges separated by a short bellows and a tripod arrangement of adjustable “legs” which can be individually extended or retracted using spanners. With correct adjustment of the three legs, the angle of the two flanges with respect to each other can be altered in any direction by a couple of degrees.
