By working with Shimadzu and a range of other pump suppliers we are able bring you a range of different pumps focussed primarily on the high (HV) and ultra-high vacuum (UHV) environment and targeted at customers in academia, national laboratories and industrial R&D.

Turbomolecular Pumps: Use high-speed (~60,000 RPM) rotating blades to direct gas molecules toward the exhaust. Ideal for high vacuum and ultra-high vacuum applications.

Backing pumps: Turbo pumps are not designed to pump down from atmospheric pressure alone, and require a backing dry scroll, rotary vane or roots pump connected to their outlet. Rotary pumps tend to be cheaper but the mechanism is filled with oil which can cause contamination at UHV and require regular maintenance like the oil change in a car. Scroll pumps operate without any oil by employing two interleaved spiral scrolls for compression, offering clean and quiet operation. They too require regular maintenance to exchange the tip seals. If budgets allow, VSM Instruments recommends Kashiyama backing pumps which use a dry roots mechanism which is maintenance free for 6 years of operation. These pumps are also incredibly quiet.

Ion Pumps: Use electrical fields to ionise gas and trap ions on a solid surface.  Ion pumps are the ultimate UHV pump for vibration-sensitive applications because their operation is completely silent, they do not employ any moving parts. This also means that they are maintenance-free for long periods. Ion pumps are however not designed for pumping large volumes of gas and the chamber must be pumped down first with a mechanical pump (usually a turbo pump) before they can be switched on.

Ion pumps are often supplemented by Titanium Sublimation Pumps (TSP). The titanium filament or cartridge is heated electrically or “fired” at regular intervals, and the resulting titanium vapour condenses on nearby surfaces. This titanium layer reacts with surrounding gases so that they become chemically bound to the titanium film, effectively removing them from the vacuum environment

The Shimadzu B300 Turbo Pump is a high-performance, compact, and reliable 300l/s turbomolecular pump designed for demanding vacuum applications. It offers excellent pumping speed and compression ratios suitable for a wide range of processes in research, industry, and electronics. This size of pump is typically suitable for smaller vacuum chambers such as load locks. Key advantages include:

  • Combination of ceramic and magnetic bearings for long service intervals and lower running costs
  • Suitable for UHV pressures in combination with a small dry backing pump
  • Integrated controller allows simple push button operation, or optional display unit for detailed operating information
  • High compression ratio for optimised operation with light gases
  • Mountable in any orientation

The Kashiyama E series pumps offer considerable advantages over a traditional dry scroll pump. They operate by means of two counter-rotating multi-stage root rotors which operate without contact. They are completely dry, particulate free and air cooled. Above all they are much quieter in operation than a dry scroll pump.

The Shimadzu B70 Turbo Pump is a high-performance, compact, and reliable 70l/s turbomolecular pump designed for demanding vacuum applications. The Shimadzu EI-DPS240 display unit is designed to work seamlessly with Shimadzu B70 and B300 series turbo pumps. The unit provides a display of key pump parameters in a conveniently sized unit. It can also be used to display the pressure reading from any pressure gauge with a 0-10V analogue output and provides convenient interlock functions.

The Kashiyama G series pumps offer a step up in some key specifications compared to the E series. In particular they are even quieter, slightly smaller and meet the European harmonic emission requirements.
